The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will be inaugurating its new Visitors' Center on September 7 in the presence of delegates from the 171 member countries, officials of WIPO, invited guests from the UN and members of the press. Ms Sheila Batchelor, Chair of the General Assembly of WIPO and Dr Kamil Idris, Director General of WIPO, will jointly preside at the opening ceremony, The Center is an area dedicated to intellectual property information which offers the public the services of a bookstore, a souvenir boutique and a cyber-corner with access to WIPO's Internet website. Creators and professionals concerned with intellectual property, nationals of member countries, university students and the general public will all be welcome. They will be introduced to all the activities that this international organization carries on and the vital roles that it and its member countries play, the principal objective being to promote the protection of the intellectual property throughout the world. That protection is intended for the worlds of research, development, industry, art, communication and commerce. The Visitors' Center features a display area in which a multitude of intellectual-property-related activities are presented to the public. The first exhibition, which will coincide with the opening, is devoted to women inventors of the five continents, and is appropriately entitled: "WOMEN INVENT" (open to the public from September 8, 1998 to March 31, 1999 Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5pm) This exhibition is a portrait gallery of girl and women inventors (most of them award-winners) leading their lives in a variety of areas. They include pioneers of invention and also women inventors of this century who, like all creators, concern themselves untiringly, day after day, with pushing back the frontiers of science and exposing new challenges...
